Choosing a brand for your saas startup

Color

Indigos, violets and teals are popular for a reason: they’re calm, modern and render well on screens. Differentiate with an unexpected accent, and use the tonal scales here as your UI ramp for hovers, borders and backgrounds.

Typography

Geometric and grotesque sans-serifs feel precise and current. Choose a body font designed for screens with clear distinctions between I, l and 1.

Common mistake

A brand color that only works in one lightness breaks in dark mode. Make sure your primary has usable light and dark shades.

Your saas startup brand checklist

  • One primary color, used everywhere. Website, signage, social and packaging should all lead with it.
  • Text that passes WCAG AA (4.5:1). Use the text-safe shade of your brand color for links and small text.
  • A logo that works in one color. You’ll need it for stamps, embroidery, vinyl and fax-quality prints.
  • Two fonts, no more. One with personality for headings, one built for reading.
  • A written brand guide. Exact color codes and fonts, shared with anyone who designs for you.
